The data for this project was mainly collected through an Internet survey about the mapping controversies project Tax Wars, and three interviews revolving around topics related to it. All data was colour-coded in accordance with a list of categories, where each category was represented by a colour. The colour coded data and the categories can be found in the data section of the project. The coded data has formed the empirical basis for the paper and the essay for this project.

A group of 8 people answered the survey. They were asked to spend ten minutes freely exploring the web page Tax Wars and then write their answers. The survey contained both open questions, where participants were asked to write freely about their experience of the page and questions with multiple-choice answers. The survey answers can be found in the data section of the project. The survey participants are referred to as Participant 1, Participant 2 etc.

The people interviewed were a journalist, a student and a biologist. The journalist is working with data mapping. The student has recently done a mapping controversies project and the biologist has a special interest in visualisations in relation to knowledge creation within his field.
